'Plain English is not just a question of getting some belly laughs at the expense of the bureaucracy, or saving John and Jill Citizen from unnecessary inconvenience or suffering because authority can't or won't communicate intelligibly; it goes deeper than that. Gobbledygook may indicate a failure to think clearly, a contempt for one's clients, or more probably a mixture of both. A system that can't or won't communicate is not a safe basis for a democracy.'
Michael Shanks, former chairman of the UK National Consumer Council

'I have had the pleasure of working with the Businesswriters & Design team on many and varied communications projects over the past eight years. I've always appreciated the professional way in which they go about their business. They focus, first and foremost, on finding solutions to make their clients' lives easier. Their copywriting and graphic design work is outstanding. Most of all I appreciate their strategic approach, which supports the long-term goals of the organisations they're working with, and their intelligent planning.'

Why writing in plain English is so important

Five tips for better speeches
The first speech I ever wrote was for a chairman of a bank. I'd written the letter to shareholders in his annual report and he asked me to prepare his speech for the annual general meeting. I accepted with alacrity. When the day of the AGM arrived...

I was a speech writer for the federal Independent MP, Peter Andren, who died in 2007.

Peter had also been a journalist who valued clear writing.

I've just happened upon your website, and feel thoroughly refreshed and enthused about writing again.

I also love design. What a find this website is!

Thank you.

What a lovely comment Helen. It makes an enormous difference working for someone who values good writing and design so you were lucky to have found Peter . . . if only all clients/bosses were like that!
And we're delighted that we've managed to reignite your passion for writing. Are you still writing speeches?
