A poser for many big organisations is communicating strategy in a way that ensures employees will understand how it relates to them. This was the task presented to us by power retailer Endeavour Energy. Taking our cues from a 1950s electrician’s handbook, we wrote and designed a pocket-sized booklet, big on diagrams and charts, that explained the organisation’s purpose and values and communicated the strategic plan with simple bulleted explanations on: “Our breakthrough actions”, “Why we need to do this”, “The steps we’re taking” and the “Target”. To provide context, each page also included a section on the bigger picture and at the back of the book we included a brief summary of the thinking behind the plan and an organisational scorecard. The result is a useful, easy-to-understand document that senior management has used with great effect.
